SS Royal Emirates Investment and Global Biopolymers Industries have formed a new venture to transform the PLA bioplastics industry. Emirates Biotech will lead PLA biopolymer production and marketing in the Middle East, Africa, and India, providing a sustainable alternative to fossil fuel-based plastics.

Shaikh Suhail Ali Saeed Rashed Al-Maktoum and Dr. Shadi Jabari signed the agreement on behalf of SS Royal Kit Emirates Investment, and Mr. Theodorus Everwijn signed on behalf of Global Biopolymers Industries.

Formerly Gulf Biopolymers Industries, Emirates Biotech will be headquartered in Dubai and plans to build a PLA production facility in the UAE.

What is PLA biopolymer?

▪ PLA is a highly sustainable biopolymer that is 100% renewable, 100% biodegradable and 100% recyclable.

▪ PLA is manufactured from Lactic Acid that is produced through the fermentation of plant biomass with a high starch content.

▪ PLA is suitable for conventional plastic forming processes like injection moulding, and as such can be used across multiple sectors and industries.

▪ PLA biopolymers are compostable meaning that their end of life have no impact on the environment, even improving soil quality as they decompose, and contribute to the circular economy.

▪ The production of PLA is carbon neutral which is beneficial to more and more countries who are committing to Net Zero timelines.
